Increasing Awareness of Hazardous Apps Associated with Human Trafficking

Nicole Flanigan UTSN, Andrea Feliciano-Cruz UTSN

Human trafficking is defined as a person exploited and forced to participate in labor or sexual acts without their consent by another person for profit (NHTH). Human trafficking is a growing public health concern in Texas that can be directly linked to hazardous apps. These apps are being used and manipulated from their primary intentions by traffickers to lure vulnerable individuals into human trafficking. With ease of accessibility to technology, youth in particular are vulnerable to the rising population of trafficking victims.

This is a really great poster, Nicole. In doing your research, did you find any evidence around what, if anything, these apps are doing to combat the use of their app for human trafficking? —Anna Hornsby

Thank you for sharing this important work. I appreciate how practical the recommendations are from your research. —Jeanette Herman

I’m impressed by the design of this poster: It’s easy to follow, you set forth the findings from your article review very clearly, and you identify the apps by their (recognizable) icons —Rob Reichle
