Academic Support

We understand that your role in caring for one or more dependents influences your experience as a student. Connect with The University of Texas at Austin’s academic supports, which empower you to succeed in your classes.

Title IX Protections

Title IX protects against discrimination related to pregnancy, childbirth, medical recovery from pregnancy-related conditions, and parenting in educational institutions. Under Title IX, pregnant and parenting students are required to receive equal opportunity for participation and access to academic resources. Pregnant and parenting students are to be afforded reasonable accommodations based on individual needs. Some examples of reasonable accommodations include, but are not limited to:

  • Adjusted assignment deadlines
  • Adjusted attendance requirements
  • The opportunity to make-up missed work or attendance points
  • Exam accommodations
  • Access to lactation spaces during class

If you have any questions regarding your rights as a pregnant or parenting student, or if you wish to file a Title IX report, please contact UT Austin’s Title IX Intake Coordinators.

Disability & Access

Students with disabilities can register with Disability & Access, which “ensures students with disabilities have equal access to their academic experiences at The University of Texas at Austin by determining eligibility and approving reasonable accommodations.” Possible accommodations may include, but are not limited to, classroom accommodations provided by instructors, exam accommodations, and accommodations provided by Disability & Access. In addition to campus outreach, their office provides students registered with their office with guidance on using and discussing accommodations at UT Austin. Students who are pregnant may reach out to Disability & Access if they develop a disability as a result of pregnancy or childbirth. For example, students who develop preeclampsia during pregnancy or depression or anxiety post-partum may register with their office. Students may reach out to the Title IX Office for accommodations for pregnancy itself.
