Dr. Teresa Long

Teresa LongTeresa “Terry” Long is an Austin civic leader responsible for funding, chairing, and organizing numerous philanthropic efforts across Austin, Texas, and the United States. Together with her husband Joe, Terry has supported the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, provided opportunities for minorities and youth through a number of organizations, and revitalized the Austin visual and performing arts scene.

Additionally, the Longs are generous supporters of the University of Texas at Austin. In 2000, UT’s Institute of Latin American Studies was renamed the Teresa Lonzano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) in recognition of an endowment gift from the Longs, which funds student scholarships and awards, as well as professorships and visiting professorships. Over the years, the Longs have supported numerous other university programs, colleges, and schools.

Terry received her EDD, MED, and BS in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1965, she became the first Latina to complete a doctorate in health and physical education at UT Austin.

After teaching in Alice, TX, Teresa served as a research associate at the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and later joined the late Governor John Connally’s committee on public education. As a consultant, Terry advised the U.S. Department of Education and TEA’s Division of Compensatory Education.

Teresa lives with her husband in Austin, TX. The Longs are avid collectors of impressionist and post-impressionist art and frequent travelers. They’ve visited every continent and over 125 countries.
