Meet UGS Students
Stephanie Cree developed animated book covers for her Digital Arts & Media Creative Project, The World Inside . In redesigning the covers of some of her favorite books, Stephanie integrated her skills in animation and website construction with her passion for literature.
Marketing major and Media, Culture & Identities student Madison Benvegnu analyzed representations of villains in animated Disney films, which led her to an exploration of the presentations of overarching themes of right and wrong and the need for villains in a story.
Kelsey Mumford, majoring in Nursing and Biology and completing the Ethics & Leadership in Health Care BDP, conducted a literature review on the effects of case management in faith-based settings on the health of black, lower-income adults, which will be be used later in the year as part of a larger pilot study in East Austin. Kelsey analyzed case management as a tool to decrease racial health disparities and created a poster to present her findings.
Corporate Communications major and Environment & Sustainability BDP student Julianna Maxwell completed an internship with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), promoting and administering the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program. She was able to put her communication background to use in a professional setting and considered ways to advocate for sustainability while meeting corporate needs.
Summer 2017 graduate Jasmine Barnes, completing her BDP in Media, Culture & Identities with a focus in Identities, Communities & Place, interned with the Longhorn Center for Community Engagement (LCCE)’s Alternative Breaks – Austin trip. As a Trip Leader, Jasmine developed curriculum on social justice as well as trained and led a group of students in exploring and documenting East Austin minority communities, highlighting their stories and experiences through short videos featuring interviews with community members.
For her Creative Project, Jacqueline Hernández, an RTF major completing the Digital Arts & Media BDP, developed a series of artworks depicting the signs of the zodiac using the Adobe Creative Suite which allowed her to hone her style as an artist.
In her internship with Bale Creek Allen Gallery, Brooke Johnson, completing a BDP in Museum Studies as well as majors in Studio Art and Art History, deepened her understanding of the roles of curator and artist. In addition to coordinating art shows, social media and PR for the gallery, Brooke also developed an independent project reflecting on the artist-as-curator in museum spaces.
Zackery Fernandez spent the semester considering social inequality in education. The Mechanical Engineering major pursuing a BDP certificate in Social Inequality, Health & Policy researched the impact of charter schools relative to traditional public schools in increasing children’s access to higher education.
Erin Shilling, a Biology major completing a BDP in Environment & Sustainability, participated in the Squam Lakes Conservation Internship program in Holderness, New Hampshire, where she worked to eradicate invasive species, educate visitors, and learned how conservation organizations put sustainability recommendations into practice.
Elisa Friedmann, completing the Environment & Sustainability BDP, developed a interactive web application to present and compare water samples collected by the Longhorn Stream Team with those from high-profile data sources, such as the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality. She also compared data received from lab testing to that collected on-site, to determine the reliability of citizen science testing implements.
