As an intern with Oceans Research in Mossel Bay, South Africa, Maria Iuliano assisted with a number of research projects, including a study of White Sharks. Maria, a Marine Science major completing a BDP in Environment & Sustainability, collected and organized data identifying individual sharks for a population study.

“Knowing that I was contributing to a better understanding of a data deficient species was enriching. I was able to not only assist in the procedures but also understand the rationale for these research activities.”

Jaclyn Davison, completing a BDP in Environment & Sustainability and majoring in English, spent the summer of 2017 studying abroad in Botswana. While there, she conducted additional research, evaluating the sustainability and eco footprint of the faculty-led program Climate Change, Ecosystems, and Human Dynamics.

Museum Studies BDP student Mallory Miller interned at The Alamo historic site where she transcribed and translated correspondence between Mexican military officials. She learned about many aspects of preserving and managing historic sites and collections.

Mrinalini “Nali” Shah, a Government major earning a BDP certificate in Public Policy, interned at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Washington, D.C. As a governmental affairs intern, Nali monitored congressional activity and supported UNHCR staff in their mission to assist refugees.

“Ultimately, I hope to put my scholarship and work experience towards promoting efforts that enable refugees and asylum seekers to lead lives of dignity.”

Children & Society student Nicole Griffin spent the summer of 2017 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania working with Ubongo, a local NGO that creates educational TV programming for children in Sub-Saharan Africa. This experience helped her integrate her child development knowledge with her BDP strand focus of Children, Media, and the Arts.]
