What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
I’ve really enjoyed helping students and meeting new people.

What has been the most surprising aspect of your job?
That you expect to see the same problems every semester and that you’ll know everything, but you don’t! Every semester there are new problems and some can be very hard, so the job never becomes routine.

What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
Meeting new people who I might end up working with in the future, and learning more about how different people learn. It’s always exciting to figure out ways to work with people who think so differently, and to discover different ways of teaching the same material.

What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
It’s incredibly rewarding to see my students not only improve but become a regular presence at the Sanger Learning Center! That means I’m doing my job right.

What has been the most surprising aspect of your job?
The most surprising part is probably the amount of freedom my team gets to have when presenting at workshops! No two presenters approach the material in the same way.

Maheen Shakil

Maheen Shakil, who is pursuing a BDP in Social Inequality, Health & Policy, spent the summer of 2017 in New York at the NYU Center for Health, Identity, Behavior, and Prevention Studies, where she assisted in HIV research. This experience opened her eyes to interacting with research participants—not just data—and reignited her passion for research work.

Kelsey Mumford

Kelsey Mumford, an Ethics & Leadership in Health Care BDP student, conducted a literature review on the effects of case management in faith-based settings on the health of black, lower-income adults, which will be be used later in the year as part of a larger pilot study in East Austin. Kelsey analyzed case management as a tool to decrease racial health disparities and created a poster to present her findings.

In her internship with Bale Creek Allen Gallery, Brooke Johnson, completing a BDP in Museum Studies, deepened her understanding of the roles of curator and artist. In addition to coordinating art shows, social media and PR for the gallery, Brooke also developed an independent project reflecting on the artist-as-curator in museum spaces.

What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
The most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Learning Center is the hands on experience with the students and witnessing all Sanger’s dedicated members go above and beyond to help students. Being surrounded by dedicated educators and workers that want to help students as much as possible has been very contagious.

Alexandra Adams

What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
The most rewarding part has been seeing students grow throughout the semester. It’s such an amazing feeling to have a student come back for a final exam review, and see them no longer struggling with material that they couldn’t understand on their first exam! I love that the Sanger Learning Center promotes “learning how to learn” more than “cramming for the exam.”

James Hall

What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
The most rewarding part of my jobs is see the impact you have on the students in real time. You can really tell how much you are able to help the person and it always brightens my day to see someone walk away feeling more confident about their class or their study habits.
