Umair Khakoo

Discuss your general career path since graduating from UT.

After working for a couple very different startups doing sales and business development, I realized I wanted a role in which I was actually working with clients but not doing sales. It’s definitely been a rollercoaster as within my first year after college I’ve had three very different jobs. I have learned a lot out of it and am now teaching myself some programming.

I work for Zynga as a Producer where I do project and product management for mobile games.

After I graduated from UT, I moved to the Bay Area to work for Electronic Arts (EA). I was an intern over summer 2016 before being hired full-time in October. I worked there as a Project manager until I returned to Austin to work for Zynga.

After I graduated UT in May 2016, I pursued my long-time dream of attending medical school. I am currently a second-year medical student at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Discuss your general career path since graduating from UT.

Since graduating from UT, I’ve gone to work at a local oil and gas law firm. After graduation, I knew I wanted to take some time off from school and get settled before moving on to graduate or law school.

How did your BDP experience influence your career path and interests?

Brianna has participated in several undergraduate research projects, the most recent of which involves sequencing the genomes of fungi.

My HealthyHorns peer educator class provided a credit opportunity for attending a Voices Against Violence (VAV) performance. The performance motivated me to become a part of the Theatre for Dialogue program to promote healthy relationship behaviors on our campus.

How did you find your internship?
I knew I was interested in helping immigrant populations while also putting my language skills to use so I did some online research to find agencies in Austin that would support this endeavor. Refugee Services of Texas stood out to me as an “in” to the behind-the-scenes world of a currently hotly-debated issue.
