What has been the most rewarding part about working at the Sanger Center?
Working and interacting with students from all years at the university. It’s a really enjoyable experience to talk with students about the class they’re seeking help in and ease any concerns they have.
What has been the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your job?
The fact that I’m learning as much as the students are! Especially with biology, when you’re teaching someone a concept, you always end up with a better understanding of it yourself. I’m always surprised by how much information I’m able to retain because I’m tutoring someone. The unexpected aspect of my job is I ended up performing better academically because I don’t forget about the intro science classes that I took 2 years ago.
What advice would you give to incoming students about being academically successful at UT?
If you struggle in a class and get lower grades than you expected, don’t dwell on it too much and move along. If you keep obsessing over every grade, the stress will make you miserable. Instead, think about the present situation and do something about it! Seek help, ask someone for advice, etc. Don’t go through it alone.
