Preparing for a Tutoring Appointment

Interested in an appointment with a peer tutor? Here’s what you need to know:

Who

Whether or not you’ve ever worked with a tutor before, whether you’re feeling completely lost in a brand-new subject or are looking for tips to maximize your study time, peer tutoring is for you! All UT undergraduates are eligible for free tutoring at the Sanger Learning Center in any course we offer. Our tutors are fellow undergraduates who have successfully taken the course in the past and have received training in working collaboratively with peers to assist their learning, regardless of a student’s current knowledge or background. The goal of peer tutoring is not to replace classroom teaching, but to increase students’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in their own learning process in an encouraging environment.

How

Go to MyUGS and click on “schedule a session.” You will be able to select either “online” or “on-site” from the drop-down menu to check appointment availability for your course. Claim a session and follow the instructions to schedule the appointment. It is beneficial to describe the material or assignment you would like help with so your tutor can prepare for a productive session.

If you don’t see any appointments available for a course, it may be because all appointments are currently booked; tutors typically post their availability on Fridays for the following week. You are also welcome to contact our staff to ask about availability for your particular course, as we can often find tutors who are able to help.

Once the tutor has received your request in MyUGS, you will be sent an email with the time and location or Zoom link. You will be able to send additional messages to your tutor in MyUGS should you need to contact them.

When

Appointments may be booked up to one week in advance and as little as 24 hours in advance. Once it is within 24 hours of your appointment time, you will no longer be able to cancel and may be subject to a lock on your account and a $14 fee (payable with BevoPay) if you miss your appointment.

Tutoring sessions are offered every day of the week, as early as 7 a.m. and as late as 11 p.m. If you arrive late to your session, you will be able to participate until the originally scheduled end time.

Where

On-site tutoring is held in a quiet study space in cubicles on the third floor of Jester Academic Center, above J2 Dining. Online tutoring can be accessed from anywhere via Zoom, but having a relatively quiet space with a dependable internet connection is helpful. You are not required to turn on your camera, but you will be asked to show your UT ID briefly at the start of the session.

What

Be prepared with electronic copies of your notes, homework, study materials, etc.

For online tutoring, It is helpful (but not required) to have the following:

  • Webcam
  • Touchscreen computer/tablet
  • Functioning microphone
