Rangel

The Rangel Program is a U.S. State Department program administered by Howard University that seeks to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers as diplomats in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State.

The Program encourages applicants from minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need. Fellows receive up to $37,500 annually in assistance for tuition, room, board, books and other related expenses. They must commit to five years of service in the Foreign Service.

Conditions of Eligibility

  • Must be U.S. citizen
  • Must be seeking admission to graduate school for two-year program at a U.S. university in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service
  • Must have cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Application Materials

  • Personal statement (600 words or less) discussing reasons for applying and interest in foreign affairs
  • Statement (400 words or less) discussing financial need
  • Two letters of rec, one from a faculty member and one from someone who can comment on applicant’s non-academic achievements or potential
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship
  • Student Aid Report from FAFSA
  • Transcripts
