The School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) hosted several events to welcome students to The University of Texas at Austin for the 2018-2019 school year.
The week began with the Undergraduate Studies Leadership Summit on Monday, August 27. Incoming first-year students and UGS Alumni Guides, Ambassadors, and Council members participated in a half-day retreat to develop leadership skills and get a jumpstart on the transition to college. Jamie Beard, Assistant Director of the Blackstone LaunchPad, led activities illustrating the benefits of mentorship and entrepreneurship. Charles Gee and David Dessauer of the Leadership and Ethics Institute led group sessions on values and ethical leadership. The Leadership Summit was closed with a keynote address from former UT women’s basketball coach and Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Jody Conradt.
On Tuesday morning, August 28 the sixteenth annual Freshman Reading Round-Up brought together first-year students and prestigious faculty members the day before classes began. Participants read a great book over the summer, met an outstanding UT professor who suggested the book, and got acquainted with like-minded first-year peers who read the same book. On Tuesday evening, Gone to UGS celebrated the arrival of the class of 2022 on the Forty Acres. Students enjoyed barbecue, visited with staff and advisors from UGS programs, sang “The Eyes of Texas,” and posed for a class photo.
