The Office of Undergraduate Research hosted the annual Longhorn Research Poster Session as an online event April 16-17 during Research Week. Students presented more than 110 research posters on interdisciplinary topics ranging from history to human development to molecular biology. For the transition to a virtual event, presenters uploaded images of their posters, with some also providing supporting materials such as audio descriptions and videos. This year, students from the College of Liberal Arts Research Poster Session and Dean’s Reception also presented their research as part of the event.
In just two days, the posters were viewed almost 17,000 times by a global audience of more than 5,000 visitors.
Thanks to a gift from Kimberly and Scott Martin, this year’s Longhorn Research Poster Session offered awards for students presenting posters. Each college or school participating in the event nominated students as finalists for awards. These students spoke with judges via Zoom, fielding questions and elaborating on their work as they would at an in-person poster session. Students were judged on their statements of research problems and methodology, their results and conclusions, and poster design and oral discussion. Top presenters were selected for $2000, $1000, and $500 awards. Judges also selected $500 and $250 winners for design awards, and UT undergraduates voted online for a $1000 “audience choice” award.
This year’s other virtual Research Week events include the Bridging Disciplines Programs Poster Session on April 27. Research Week and the Longhorn Research Poster Session are sponsored by Kimberly and Scott Martin, the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Senate of College Councils, and Phi Kappa Phi.
