Undergraduate Studies at Explore UT

The School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) hosted four events for kids, families, and school groups during Explore UT on Saturday, March 2. The Office of Undergraduate Research hosted informational sessions on getting involved in research, while Sanger Learning Center student panelists shared what they wish they had known before making the transition to college. The Blackstone LaunchPad helped entrepreneurial-minded kids hone their business pitches, and children donned caps and gowns at the “Future Graduate Photo Booth” hosted by Undergraduate Studies Council.

For the second year in a row, UGS Dean Brent Iverson served as the chair of Explore UT. To start the day, Iverson visited Dell Medical School where he walked through a giant replica of a colon, learned about surgery with the DaVinci Robot, and saw the MasSpec pen that can detect cancerous cells in less than 10 seconds. In the afternoon, he ignited hydrogen balloons with Dr. Kate Biberdorf during “Fun With Chemistry” in Hogg Auditorium, watched veterans perform with the Texas Warrior Chorus, and marched with the Longhorn Band. He also thanked volunteers across campus for sharing UT Austin’s amazing opportunities with thousands of visitors.

As students gathered on the Main Mall, arranging themselves into the shape of Texas for the traditional giant class photo, Dean Iverson and President Fenves gave closing remarks thanking volunteers and participants and urging students to keep asking questions and exploring possibilities.
