Former Undergraduate Studies student Aleigha Jalomo is currently pursuing an advertising degree. Before she graduates next spring, Aleigha shares her experience as a first-gen student on the Forty Acres.

How do you work through the challenges that come with being a first-generation college student?
As a Hispanic, first-generation student, my family and I set high expectations for myself. Navigating my ability to meet these expectations is a challenge. To work through this, I found that it is important to have open conversations with yourself and those who you trust. In addition, have an optimistic outlook. Everything will work out the way it is supposed to!

What advice would you give to your first-year self?
Take time for yourself. Balancing school, work, and a social life is exhausting. Taking time for yourself is so important. Whether that be a brisk walk or a movie night, find something that brings you happiness. 

Did you have any fears or concerns about college before starting?
A fear I had before starting college was not being able to find a sense of community. UT is a huge campus. However, with so many diverse students, it was exciting to enter a community or even create a community where we could grow and learn from each other’s experiences. I found a community that shares my values. It is okay to scope out a few organizations and figure out what fits you and what doesn’t. 

What has been your favorite moment at UT?
There are too many great moments to honestly pick just one! Therefore, all I have to say is: expect the unexpected while at UT.
