Plan II Honors

What substantial writing projects will your students complete during the course?

Four text-based, critical, analytic essays, each five to six pages in length. Each essay develops original insights about our authors, in the student’s own and unique voice. The essay must formulate a clear thesis, stated in the first paragraph, then defended with clear, rationally plausible, discursive arguments that support both the thesis and the arguments through close textual analyses of the assigned readings, while drawing on one or more carefully chosen concrete examples.

What kinds of feedback will students receive from the instructor, and what opportunities will they have to read and comment on each other’s work? How often and how extensively will they revise their own writing?

Students revise, and substantially improve, the first of their four essays with respect to my critique of their argumentation, organization, and stylistic choices that support argumentation and organization. This experience serves as a guide for composing the subsequent three essays.

What amount of the final course grade will come from the written work (minimum one-third for a three-hour course)?

90%
