What substantial writing projects will your students complete during the course?

Students will complete multiple writing assignments over the semester including three biweekly progress reports (one page each), a final design report (five-eight pages), and two project design proposals (approximately 10 pages). All of these assignments require either academic or applied writing. In total, students write a minimum of six substantial writing assignments throughout the semester. In addition, each student maintains a design notebook, a precise record of everything s/he does on the project that is regularly reviewed by a TA.

What kinds of feedback will students receive from the instructor, and what opportunities will they have to read and comment on each other’s work? How often and how extensively will they revise their own writing?

Students have the opportunity to revise each of the three design proposals/reports in response to peer review. Students will also have the opportunity to revise the project proposal in response to instructor feedback. The students will receive an individual grade on the lab notebook and will receive weekly feedback from the TA. The project’s company representative(s) will have the opportunity to give feedback on the progress reports and the final design proposal. Each peer review is based on the same evaluation rubric used by the instructor and the TAs. The instructor evaluates and provides substantial feedback on the first draft of the final group project design proposal. The first draft is worth a very small amount and final draft is worth 35% of the final grade. In addition, the instructor takes the students through a sample design report from a past semester. Students review each others’ drafts for the redesign proposal (two reviews per draft). The instructors and the TAs review the proposal when they evaluate the reports.

What amount of the final course grade will come from the written work (minimum one-third for a three-hour course)?

  • Progress reports (3) = 3%
  • Redesign project proposal = 10%
  • Redesign project final report = 30%
  • Sponsored project proposal = 35%
  • Design notebook = 10%
  • TOTAL = 90%
