Jacob Parra

DSP student Jacob Parra
Major:
Management Information Systems
Graduation Year:
Spring 2021
"DSP has provided me with such a great community. Everyone was so kind and welcoming and really made UT feel smaller than it actually is."

What was your first choice of major and why were you interested in that major?

My first-choice program was business because I wanted to put myself out there and work in team settings. Specifically, my first-choice major was management information systems because it combined my passion for technology and I wanted to be able to see how it is applied to real-world settings. One day I want to start a technology business because I know that is one way to really make a change in the world.

How did you feel when you were not accepted into your first-choice major and instead found out you would be admitted to the School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) as undeclared?

I felt disheartened but I knew my hesitation in my application meant I did not know what I wanted to do at first. I was scared but excited to see what my first year could offer.

How has the Discovery Scholars Program (DSP) helped you to be more successful at UT?

DSP has provided me with such a great community through students sharing the same classes as me, advisors helping me through my challenges, and even having a physical space on campus I could call mine. Everyone was so kind and welcoming and really made UT feel smaller than it actually is.

How has the Discovery Scholars Program helped you find a major you are excited about?

DSP really tested me on which major to choose by providing plenty of resources to get an inside look at what a person in a particular major would experience and how they can grow through it. I had opportunities to talk to former students through MIGs or to be exposed to classes with students that were already in the major.

What did you learn about yourself through the process of starting out undeclared?

I learned I can persevere and I learned how to learn. Those are two fundamental qualities that will follow me through the rest of my life. They are key to being successful no matter what problem you may face down the road.

What would you say to new UT students who will be part of the Discovery Scholars Program?

I believe DSP is the best 360 Connection to be part of for your first year. You have the flexibility to explore your interests while still being provided with top-class resources. Enjoy your time in it because it goes by quick!
