“While I had previous experience in social media, I'd never worked on social media for a government body and that's a whole different ball game.”

How did you find your internship?
I found this internship through the Virtual Students Foreign Service (VSFS) program. They listed hundreds of different options relating to a range of countries, but my prior experience with Germany made this one a perfect fit.

Describe the work you have done in your internship.
I worked remotely with a social media manager at the U.S. State Department. All my responsibilities revolved around creating social content for embassies to use to better explain what the Transatlantic Trade and Investments Negotiations are to citizens of both the E.U. and the U.S. I created a “did you know” series of graphics and another series highlighting successful small businesses throughout Europe.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your Connecting Experience?
The most rewarding experience was seeing my designs and ideas make it through final approval and actually get distributed. The State Department requires multiple levels of approval and the whole process took a couple months, but in the end everything was approved and that was a great moment.

In what ways has this Connecting Experience shaped your plans for the future?
While I had previous experience in social media, I’d never worked on social media for a government body and that’s a whole different ball game. I’m considering going into the nonprofit sector so everything I’ve learned at this internship about process and communications concerns would definitely apply.
