“BDP allowed me to explore opportunities where I was able to understand how I could combine my interests to create a realistic career path.”

I work for NIKE, Inc. in Portland, OR, as the Director of Supply Chain Performance Management. I provide guidance and direction on operational target setting processes, supporting data analysis, and scenario planning around key parameters that influence service, inventory, or supply chain cost.

Discuss your general career path since graduating from UT.

After graduating from UT, I went to work for The Walt Disney Company as an intern in Conservation Education programs. I then moved into roles in Corporate Environmental Strategy, and eventually Supply Chain Management for the global theme parks. During my time with Disney, I also received my MBA focusing on supply chain sustainability. I then joined Nike, Inc. in Portland where I held roles in Sustainable Manufacturing Operations, Advanced Manufacturing, and Supply Chain Performance Management.

How did your BDP experience influence your career path and interests?

My experience in BDP was hugely influential in my career path. The program was the first time I was able to conceptually combine my interests in both business/finance and sustainability (at that time we called it Corporate Responsibility). I was struggling trying to find practical applications in the standard path and class structure for my major, and the BDP allowed me to explore opportunities where I was able to understand how I could combine my interests to create a realistic career path.

What do you value most about your BDP experience?

I really valued the “blue sky” approach the BDP offered to me and the guidance the program advisors gave to help support my participation. The world really is your oyster in the BDP and if you have an interest and an idea of how to pursue that passion, the BDP and advising team helps firm up that idea and give it legs. I really enjoyed having discussions with my advisor on how to incorporate different aspects of work, industry, and interests into my Connecting Experiences and course offerings.

In what ways did an interdisciplinary education prepare you for what you are currently doing?

It aligns 100%. I have been fortunate that my career has blended environmental studies and sustainability into a corporate setting, which allows me to ultimately influence business practices and the bottom line. I wouldn’t be where I am without the BDP and the opportunity to define that specific interdisciplinary approach.
