Flags and Pass/Fail Courses Spring 2020 Follow-up

March 30

As a companion message to the email that was sent out earlier today from the Center for Skills and Experience Flags about Flags, pass/fail, and spring 2020, I wanted to let you know that it is also true that courses taken pass/fail (and passed) in spring 2020 can count toward core curriculum requirements.

On Saturday, March 28, I updated the logic in the degree audit system in all active catalogs to allow this exception for both Core Curriculum and Flag requirements. Any audits run after that time should show courses taken this semester on a Pass/Fail grading basis that are either Flagged or listed in the core curriculum counting without need for an override for those requirements.

My apologies for the double-messaging on this. Please let me know if you have any questions or see anything odd in the degree audit system relating to pass/fail and core curriculum or Flags.

Flags and Pass/Fail Courses Spring 2020

March 30

On the heels of the announcement on various academic policies during this challenging time, the Center for Skills and Experience Flags sent out an email to professors with flagged courses with further guidance when it comes to Flags credits and students this semester.

I wanted to ensure that advisors were aware that courses taken pass/fail (and passed) can count toward Flag credits for spring 2020.

The following is a suggested statement that we’ve drafted and sent out to professors with some wording on Flags moving forward this semester. Given that our jobs are largely student-facing, I thought it was important that you all have the same information:

Suggested Statement: Guidelines regarding the Pass/Fail Option for this course:

You all now have the option to declare this course pass/fail up until May 29, 2020. Typically, students electing to take a Flag course pass/fail would not satisfy the Flag degree requirement. Because of the unprecedented situation this semester, however, students who opt to take a spring 2020 Flagged course pass/fail will still satisfy the Flag degree requirement if they pass the course.

If you opt for pass/fail credit, here are the general requirements you will need to complete in order to pass this class:

  1. You will have to complete each required assignment. Assignments and due dates may have changed from our original syllabus, so please check our updated schedule in Canvas.
  2. You will be expected to continue ongoing engagement with the class in its online form. If you stop contributing to class altogether, this will not fulfill the requirement for “ongoing engagement.”

If you face circumstances that prevent you from completing assignments on time or contributing regularly as required, please contact me as soon as possible. I will work with you to accommodate your specific situation and needs as much as possible, and I am happy to discuss any questions you may have about the pass/fail option.

Moving forward the petitions process is the same. Visit our petitions pags for more information. Students who have questions can feel free to email me at flags.advising@austin.utexas.edu. Zoom appointments are available as well.

Thanks for all you’re doing and remember to keep taking deep breaths!
