Human Rights & Social Justice BDP student Josue Teniente completed an internship with the Equal Justice Center where he helped share information about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and assisted clients in preparing DACA applications.

"My Connecting Experience gave me first-hand knowledge about this field and sharpened my skills in order to participate in it. After my experience with the Equal Justice Center, my desire to pursue Human Rights and Social Justice is even stronger than when I started."

Sarah Brusseau, completing a BDP in Environment & Sustainability, interned with the UT Resource Recovery in the early stages of opening a Reuse Store for the university. She researched and created a business plan for the store as part of the university’s Zero Waste initiative.

"I was able to see just how large the field of Sustainability is and found my interests involve our oceans – how does the plastic water bottle you are drinking out of affect the composition of our oceans?"

Erinn Wright conducted independent research on the prevalence of diabetes in Belize and the role various for-profit, not-for-profit and governmental entities play in promoting wellbeing. This experience allowed her to see interactions between public health and international development, her area of focus within her Social Entrepreneurship & Non-Profits BDP certificate.

Digital Arts & Media student Vivian Nguyen explained infectious diseases, their causes, and preventative measures through her interactive infographic and animation, The Fight Against Infectious Diseases.

Caroline Starling, a Social Inequality, Health & Policy BDP student, connected her interests in medicine and public health as an intern with the Women’s Health and Family Planning Association of Texas (WHFPT). As a Research and Evaluation Intern, she assisted with data analysis related to Title X funding and agencies’ financial sustainability.

Cody Church, completing a BDP certificate in Environment & Sustainability, undertook an independent research project called “Natural Burial: The Effect of Resurgent Social Death Practices on Attitudes toward Environmentalism among the Working Class,” which explored the funeral industry and possible motivations for a return to natural burial methods.

"Finding the connections between environmental and social issues through this project proved to be interesting, and I would love to pursue the subject further in the future."

As a PLUS peer coordinator, Katie helps new PLUS facilitators learn how to lead effective study sessions. She also helps students connect with Sanger resources as a student associate.
