In recognition of their outstanding teaching and high academic standards, Signature Course professors Lori Holleran Steiker and Brad Love will receive the 2013-2014 President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award this spring.
“‘Lori and Brad are models of creative and effective teaching in the Signature Course program,” said Patty Micks, senior program coordinator for the Office of the First-year Experience. “They exemplify a commitment to improving undergraduate education and enhancing a student’s overall academic experience at UT. I am proud that they have been honored with this award—it is certainly well deserved.”
Introducing First-years to the Power of Mass Media
Love began teaching his Signature Course, “From Gutenburg to your iPod: Mass Media and Society,” in fall 2010. This small seminar focuses on the power of mass media and aims to help students understand the past, present, and, most importantly, future of media operations.
“Brad’s course is often cited by his students as an important step in their transition from high school to the university,” said Brent Iverson, dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies. “He constantly seeks to improve his courses and their impact on his students.”
Love is an assistant professor for the Department of Advertising & Public Relations in the Moody College of Communication and began teaching at the university in 2007. He’s earned the Texas Exes Teaching Award for the College of Communication and was inducted into the School of Undergraduate Studies Society for Teaching Excellence in 2012. He’s served on the faculty panel for the Bridging Disciplines Program: Social Inequality, Health & Policy since 2008. Love earned his bachelor’s of science in journalism from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. in Media and Information Studies from Michigan State University.
Combatting Addiction Outside the Classroom
Holleran Steiker was one of the first faculty members to develop a Signature Course when the program began in fall 2008. “Young People & Drugs” began as a small seminar but expanded to a lecture-size course in the spring of 2013 due to its popularity. Holleran Steiker’s class delves into the complexities of addiction and spawned a drug and alcohol peer mentoring program at the university.
“I don’t need to explain the severity of the problem with substance abuse by UT undergraduates, especially alcohol,” Iverson said. “Lori has created an entirely new blueprint for positive change. Her Signature Course was the beginning, and the students will become catalysts for addressing one of the most significant problems facing our students.”

Holleran Steiker is an associate professor in the School of Social Work and began teaching at UT in 2000. She’s won numerous teaching awards, including the Texas Exes Award for Teaching Excellence, the UT School of Social Work’s Lora Lee Peterson Teaching Award, and the UT System Regents’ Award for Excellence in Teaching. Holleran Steiker is a Steering Committee member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers and the inaugural chair of the Signature Course Advisory Committee. She earned her bachelor’s of arts in honors English from Duke University, her master’s of social work from the University of Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. in social work from Arizona University.
