N 273 Quality and Safety for Nursing

School of Nursing

What substantial writing projects will your students complete during the course?

Students will develop and write a 3-4 page focused literature review on an instructor approved quality and safety topic. In addition, students will work with their teams to research (short written literature review), apply to nursing practice (written case study), and present an overview of selected course specific topics, such as, hospital core measures, quality and safety goals, and/or protocols. The group will present their findings to the class.

What kinds of feedback will students receive from the instructor, and what opportunities will they have to read and comment on each other’s work? How often and how extensively will they revise their own writing?

The individual focused literature review is a multi-part assignment. The paper is developed and written incrementally with grading, feedback, and opportunity for revision provided at each stage. Students will also participate in team writing and have the opportunity to co-create a short literature review and application case study. Teams will write and submit the short literature review and case study. Instructor guidance, feedback, and the opportunity to revise will be provided throughout this process. The group presentation will also provide the opportunity for revision based on both faculty and peer feedback before submission for grading. Students are also required to provide a written critique for each group presentation.

What amount of the final course grade will come from the written work (minimum one-third for a three-hour course)?

Focused Literature Review: Multipart assignment 20%
Group Project: Research (written literature review); apply to practice (written case study); oral group presentation 20%
Peer review activities: Written Critique of peer group presentations. 5%
Total 45%*
*Instructors may adjust the percentage of grades among assignments, but the total percent of the final course grade must remain at 45% or higher.
